V. Brooks (da J. Ballantyne), Carlo Marochetti, National Portrait Gallery, Londra

Nota biografica

After the fall of Louis Philippe in 1848, he removed from Paris to London, but without severing all his ties with France. In London, he resided in Onslow Square until 1867, with the foundry nearby in Fulham Road. Appreciated amongst others by John Ruskin, he succeeded to Edgar Boehm as sculptor to the Court, obtaining many official commissions, despite frequent critism of his fusion technique. He was nominated Associate of the Royal Academy in 1860 and Academician in 1867. He enjoyed the friendship of several Italians both resident in London, like Antonio Panizzi, and temporary visitors, like Massimo D’Azeglio and Antonio Fontanesi. Especially important was his collaboration with Edwin Landseer, the Queen’s favourite artist, for whom he cast the four lions at the base of Nelson’s Column in Trafalgar Square. George Frederic Watts showed a portrait of Marochetti at the New Gallery in 1891. There is a statuette of Marochetti, executed by Gabriele Ambrosio in 1888, in the collection of the National Portrait Gallery in London.
